Straight answer
Most Boston electrical calls fall into one of six groups: repairs and safety, panels and service, wiring and remodels, lighting, EV and home energy, or buildings and commercial work. If you are unsure which applies, describe the symptom on the phone and we will tell you what kind of visit it is.
A tripping breaker might be a worn breaker, an overloaded circuit or a fault in the wire. A flickering light might be a loose connection or just a dimmer that does not like LED bulbs. The table matches common situations to the page that explains the fix.
| If this is happening | Start here |
|---|---|
| Something is hot, sparking or smells like burning | Emergency electrician |
| A breaker trips and will not stay on | Electrical troubleshooting |
| You are adding a heat pump, induction range or EV charger | Smart panel and load management |
| The panel has fuses, or says Federal Pacific or Zinsco | Electrical panel upgrade |
| Insulation contractors found live knob and tube | Knob and tube replacement |
| You are selling and need the smoke and CO certificate | Smoke and CO detector installation |
Repairs & Safety
When something stopped working or feels unsafe
Most calls start here. A circuit went dead, an outlet scorched, the breaker will not stay on, or a home inspector wrote up a list before closing. Repairs are about finding the real fault, which in an older Boston house is often a connection buried behind plaster rather than the device you can see. Smoke and CO alarms sit in this group too, because they are usually a safety deadline tied to a sale.
Emergency Electrician
Partial power loss, Sparking or burning outlet
Electrical Troubleshooting
Flickering lights, Dead outlets on one circuit
Circuit Breaker Replacement
Worn breaker that trips under normal load, Hot or scorched breaker
Outlet & Switch Repair
Loose or warm outlets, Backstabbed connections
Aluminum Wiring Repair
Pigtailing with rated connectors, Aluminum-rated devices
Electrical Safety Inspection

Electrical Code Violation Repairs
Home inspection write-ups, Open junction boxes and splices
Meter Socket & Service Mast Repair
Storm-damaged service mast, Corroded meter socket
Smoke & CO Detector Installation

Panels & Service
When the equipment behind everything is the problem
The panel decides how much the house can do. Fuse boxes, recalled-reputation panels like Federal Pacific and Zinsco, and 100 amp services that cannot take a heat pump or a car charger all land here. So do subpanels, surge protection and the grounding and bonding that older services often lack. Many of these jobs start with a load calculation, which tells you whether you need a bigger service or a smarter way to share the one you have.
Electrical Panel Upgrade
100 to 200 amp service, Meter socket and service entrance cable
Federal Pacific & Zinsco Panel Replacement
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels, Zinsco and Sylvania panels
Fuse Box Replacement
Screw-in fuse panels, Cartridge fuse mains
Subpanel Installation
Basement and garage subpanels, Unit subpanels in multi-family homes
Smart Panel & Load Management
Load calculations before adding equipment, Smart panels
Whole-House Surge Protection
Panel-mounted surge devices, Point-of-use protection
Grounding & Bonding Upgrade
Ground rod and electrode work, Water pipe bonding
Wiring & Remodels
When the wires themselves need replacing or extending
Rewiring, knob and tube removal and the circuits behind a renovation. Kitchens need more small-appliance circuits than older houses ever had, bathrooms need GFCI protection and proper fans, and finished basements and additions need wiring planned before the walls close. Old plaster changes how this work is done: we fish new cable through existing paths wherever we can instead of opening whole walls.
Whole-House Rewiring
Occupied-home rewires, Plaster and lath fishing
Knob & Tube Wiring Replacement
Live knob and tube in attics, Insulation-blocking circuits
Dedicated Circuit Installation
240 volt appliance circuits, Induction range and dryer circuits
New Outlet Installation
Adding outlets to old rooms, USB and USB-C outlets
GFCI & AFCI Protection
Kitchen, bath and laundry GFCI, Two-prong outlet upgrades
Kitchen Remodel Wiring
Countertop small-appliance circuits, Island outlets
Bathroom Electrical & Exhaust Fans
Exhaust fan installation, Heated floor circuits
Basement Finishing Wiring
Framing-stage rough-in, Egress and stair lighting
Home Addition & ADU Wiring
Feeders to an addition, ADU service planning
New Construction Wiring
Rough-in and trim-out, Temporary power
Lighting
When you want better light, or the light you have flickers
Recessed lights in plaster ceilings, heavy fixtures and fans on boxes rated to hold them, under-cabinet strips, outdoor lighting and the dimmers and smart switches that run it all. Flicker with LED bulbs is usually a compatibility problem between the bulb and the dimmer, and smart switches in older houses often need a neutral wire that the original switch loop never had.
Recessed Lighting Installation
Canless LED wafers, Plaster ceiling installs
Light Fixture Installation
Chandeliers and heavy fixtures, Pendants over islands
Ceiling Fan Installation
Fan-rated boxes, Replacing a light with a fan
Under-Cabinet Lighting
Hardwired LED bars, Low voltage tape lighting
Outdoor & Landscape Lighting
Path and garden lighting, Motion security lights
Dimmer & Smart Switch Installation
LED-compatible dimmers, Smart switches without a neutral
EV & Home Energy
When the house is going electric or needs backup power
EV chargers, heat pump circuits, standby generators, interlocks and inlets, battery backup and spa wiring. These are the jobs that put new load on old services, so most of them start with a look at the panel. Backup power has one rule we never bend: a generator connects through a transfer switch or an interlock, never through a dryer outlet.
EV Charger Installation
Level 2 garage chargers, Driveway and pedestal chargers
Heat Pump Electrical Wiring
Ductless mini-split circuits, Disconnects and whips
Standby Generator Installation
Whole-home standby units, Automatic transfer switches
Generator Interlock & Inlet
Interlock kits, Power inlet boxes
Home Battery Backup Installation
Battery with existing solar, Backup-only batteries
Hot Tub & Spa Wiring
GFCI spa disconnects, Feeder runs to the yard
Buildings & Commercial
When the wiring serves more than one household or a business
Triple-deckers with a meter per flat and a house meter for the hallways, condos where the association owns the risers, intercoms and door releases, data cabling, and commercial work from retail repairs to restaurant kitchens, tenant fit-outs, workplace EV charging and exit lighting.

Separate unit meters, House meter and common areas
Condo & Apartment Electrical
Unit renovations under association rules, Landlord turnover repairs

FAQ
Questions about our electrical services
Call and describe what you see. Most people start with the symptom, like a tripping breaker or a dead room, and we tell you which kind of visit it is before anyone comes out.
Yes. A single outlet repair and a whole-house rewire are both on the list. Small jobs often get scheduled sooner because they fit between larger projects.
Usually. If you have a list, such as a loose outlet, a fixture to hang and a question about the panel, tell us when you call so the electrician plans the time.
Yes, from retail and office repairs to restaurant equipment circuits, tenant fit-outs and exit lighting. After-hours shutdowns can be scheduled so the business is not interrupted.
We file the permit on work that needs one and schedule the inspection. Boston runs its own electrical permit process, and the surrounding towns have their own wiring inspectors.
