What happens when you call an electrician at night

Straight answer

A Boston electrical problem that cannot wait, like a dead circuit, a sparking outlet or a panel that smells hot, starts with one call: we ask what you see, tell you which breaker to switch off, and send an electrician who tests the circuit and fixes the fault rather than guessing.

We install and service equipment from Square D, Siemens, Eaton, Leviton, Lutron and Generac, among others.

Local wiring

What Boston houses teach an electrician

Massachusetts has a larger share of pre-1940 houses than most states, and Boston sits right in the middle of that. Triple-deckers in Dorchester, South Boston and Roslindale and brick rowhouses in the Back Bay were wired for a few lights and a radio. Today the same walls carry heat pumps, induction ranges and car chargers.

That gap is where most of our work comes from. A two-prong outlet behind the couch, a fuse box in the cellar, a panel with three breakers sharing one slot. At WireUp Electrical Services we see these houses every week, so we know where old runs usually hide.

How a call goes

From the first ring to a labeled panel

  1. You call, a person answers

We ask what you see and whether anything is hot, sparking or wet.

  2. Safe for tonight

If it is urgent we talk you through which breaker to switch off before anyone arrives.

  3. Find the actual fault

The electrician tests the circuit and panel instead of guessing.

  4. Options and a price

You hear what failed, the fix and the cost before work starts.

  5. Fix, test, label

We repair, retest under load, update the panel directory and clean up the work area.

Warning signs

Signs a circuit needs an electrician soon

None of these fix themselves. Some can wait for a weekday visit, and a hot outlet or burning smell cannot.

Lights dim when something starts

A circuit or the whole service is near its limit, or a connection is loose.

Warm or discolored outlet plates

Heat at a device means resistance at a connection. Stop using it.

Breakers that trip again and again

The breaker is doing its job. The question is whether the load, the wire or the breaker is the problem.

A burning or fishy smell

Overheating plastic often smells fishy before it smells like smoke. Switch off the circuit and call.

Buzzing at a switch or panel

Arcing or a failing device makes noise long before it fails outright.

Two-prong outlets everywhere

Ungrounded circuits can be made safer with GFCI protection or new grounded runs.

Cambridge, Somerville and the Middlesex towns, from triple-deckers to post-war capes.

How we work

What you can expect in your house

Plaster walls handled with care

Old plaster cracks if you rush it, so we fish wires through existing paths.

Permits filed, inspections booked

Work that needs a permit gets one, and we meet the inspector so you do not have to.

A panel directory you can read

Every circuit we touch is labeled in plain words, so the next tripped breaker takes seconds to find.

Choices explained, not pushed

When a repair and an upgrade both work, you hear the trade-offs of each and decide.

Not sure if it is urgent? Describe it and we will tell you honestly.
